BG vs. Arizona State
By on March 24th, 2007
UPDATE:
BG trails 40-24 at the half. This is the most they’ve trailed by all season. It’ll take a very inspired effort to get out of this one.
UPDATE:
Arizona State just scored on a play where Kristen Thompson should have been called for a 15-yard facemask penalty for her play on Liz Honegger.
UPDATE:
As a sidenote, ASU’s band sucks and their dancers are not as attractive as you’d expect. It’s 34-22 at the last media timeout of the first half. Ali Mann is leading BG with 11 points.
UPDATE:
Another two wide open 3s by ASU. BG needs to do something about stopping these guys from being wide open. They’re getting killed from outside. 31-18 ASU with 6:22 to play.
UPDATE:
Carin Horne just got to the hoop for an and-one. It’s the third media timeout of the half and BG trails 25-16 with 7:56 to go. Horne still has a foul shot coming. BG is finding out the hard way that ASU can hit open jumpers. It might try to man them up if this continues.
UPDATE:
ASU is shooting really well. They’re 9-of-15 while BG is 6-of-18. Amber Flynn just got mugged on a no-call and came back down and knocked the girl’s shot into the front row and yelled in her face. She may be a little too fired up on the offensive end though. It’s 25-14 ASU with 8:17 to play.
UPDATE:
At the second media timeout, BG trails 17-12. Carin Horne just found Amber Flynn for a wide open layup. The Falcons made the extra pass and it really paid off. They need to try to do that more often.
UPDATE:
Press update: Arizona State guard Briann January was scratched from the starting lineup. Due to a concussion she is medically ineligible to play. You may recognize her from the sports page yesterday in the bottom right corner. 17-10 ASU with 12:30 to play.
UPDATE:
There are a fair amount of BG fans here. I’d say about 3 sections are almost full of them. They don’t look all that happy right now. Lindsey Goldsberry just hit a 3 to make it 14-7 with 14:33 to go. ASU is at the line for two shots.
–
Sorry for the delay. The NCAA is run by a bunch of idiots apparently and you have to pay $29.95 for wi-fi access.
BG trails 14-4 and is having trouble on both ends. Arizona State just hit two 3s and is getting a lot of looks inside as well. This doesn’t bode well for the Falcons. Mann scored the first two baskets for BG.

Greensboro, N.C. - Throw some D’s on it
By on March 23rd, 2007
Well, sorry I haven’t blogged until now. I’ve had one hell of a day.
As Jason mentioned, we didn’t leave until about midnight and got here at about 10:20. Of course, when I got here the damn hotel room wasn’t ready and we had to jump through hoops to get it.
Meanwhile at the colisseum, Curt Miller’s conference started at 11:15. We got there pretty much right on time.
I honestly am impressed by the confidence BG displayed today. They aren’t worried about being fatigued even though they have a seven-player rotation compared to Arizona State’s 10-player rotation.
“They’re used to having 10 different players, well we’re used to having seven players and its something that our team has bought into and our team has gotten used to and I think itll be just fine,” said Amber Flynn. “I don’t think it has anything to do with how the game is going to be played.”
In the locker room, BG’s players joked around and the overall atmosphere was loose. It was definitely the sign of a team with nothing to lose.
BG has already made history, at this point, every game they win just seperates them more from the rest of the all-time greatest MAC teams.
The Falcons have no reason not to be loose and enjoy themselves. They are the toast of the Midwest when it comes to women’s basketball. The constant exposure just puts BGSU into the memory banks of high school players.
“It’s sort of the Flutie Effect,” said Kate Achter.
Tomorrow’s game begins at noon and will be broadcast on ESPN. Stay tuned to the blog, I’ll keep it rolling all game.
I’m going to drink a few sodas now and watch Carolina kick some butt.

Hey guys this is Jason Rentner the photo editor. I will be describing what is going on here in Greensboro, N.C. through pictures and some blogging.
Day One consisted driving from BG at 12 a.m. and arriving in NC around 10:30 a.m. with no sleep. When we arrived it was warm, sunny, and you could tell basketball was in the air. We immediatley shot over to the arena for the press conference. Curt Miller was the first to talk. He talked about how he was gonna play man-to-man defense and set a lot of screens. He described how his team plays very similar to Louisville, who ASU played earlier in the tourney, and how the Falcons plan on learning from their mistakes.
We then headed into the locker room. The locker room was very relaxed. The players were just sitting there hanging out. Some were even playing sharades. They did not seem nervous at all. In fact, they seemed eager and excited for tommorrow’s game which I guess is a good thing.
After that they began practice. During practice they shot around and ran some drills. It was a pretty light practice. They were not running any plays because they did not want to run scout plays in front of cameras. Instead they will be practicing tonight in an area away from the arena.
The stadium is big. Way bigger than MSU’s. Falcon fans I encourage you to make the trip and help fill these seats. The women need good support against this tough opponent. It is now time for me to go lay out in the sun. Keep checking back for more photos of the team during their magical run.

What a great feeling
By on March 21st, 2007
Well, somehow I woke up and went to class this morning. The reason — I’m heading to North Carolina this weekend to cover the regional semi-final because BG is in it.
Last night’s game was so awesome to watch that I think I had goose bumps for the final five or so minutes. When Ali Mann hit that dagger of a 3-pointer, I just about went into cardiac arrest. I had to use the bathroom since the 15-minute mark of the second half and held it because I was afraid to miss anything.
That game meant so much to BG. They’re the first MAC women’s basketball team to advance to the round of 16 and they picked a great year to do it. There is another No. 7 seed, a No. 13 seed and a No. 10 seed left. BG is one of many upsets that have happened in an event that is normally uneventful.
Now that BG has taken on a team with every weapon imaginable, it will be interesting to see if they can do even more damage. They shut down the nation’s best 3-point shooter, Caroline Williams and minimized the potential damage of Vanderbilt’s interior. Why wouldn’t they be able to do that to any other team.
That brings me to the point that Curt Miller’s scouting reports are as good as any. He and his coaching staff have a great ability to use their defensive weapons to neutralize the opponent’s best weapon. I think he could pretty much get any available job in the country right now, but that’s a topic for another day.
Congrats to the Falcons, they’re on a great ride that could very well end up in Cleveland. How cool would that be?

BG vs. Vanderbilt - Second half
By on March 20th, 2007
UPDATE:
BG WINS!!! 58-56. HELLO GREENSBORO!
UPDATE:
March Madness at its finest folks. The refs confer about whether there was a foul before the buzzer. There was with .4 seconds left. Hello Greensboro?
UPDATE:
Achter hits the first of a one-and-one and BG is up 4 with 9.3 seconds left. My editor is going to kill me. 57-53 BG. A Vandy 3 with 1.3 left makes it 58-56.
UPDATE:
Vandy hits two free throws and Achter gets clotheslined and hits one of two. Vandy gets a layup with 10 seconds left and trails 56-53. This game is pretty damn exciting.
UPDATE:
Time out Vandy, the fans really don’t care “We are BG” they chant.
UPDATE:
Liz Honegger just grabbed a huge steal and is at the foul line. BG needs these free throw tosses to ice it for the most part. 55-49 with 32 seconds and a one-and-one for BG.
UPDATE:
Ali Mann just nailed a 3 and it gave me chills. That was so clutch it wasn’t even funny. 49 seconds left and BG is up six. WOW.
UPDATE:
It’s time to start biting your nails. BG is up 52-49 with 1:31 left. BG needs a basket very badly. They’ve used the clock up but need to improve on their 4-of-20 shooting this half. The Commodores full court press is messing them up badly.
UPDATE:
Carin Horne just picked up her third foul. She limped all the way to the other end, Vandy is in the bonus. They missed the first. Vandy just picked up a loose ball foul and it’s 52-43 with 3:42 to go. Crunch time my friends.
UPDATE
There’s five minutes to go and BG leads 52-43. Vandy has settled for jumpers the last two possessions and converted on one. Ali Mann is back in with four fouls, I guess it’s now or never for her, why not?
UPDATE:
Amber Flynn is playing outside herself. She would really love to go to Greensboro. She’s got 19 points and BG is now up 52-41 with six to play.
UPDATE:
At the third media timeout it’s 48-41 and Flynn is back at the line. Sherwood just picked up her third foul. Credit to Honegger and Goldsberry for hustle plays on the last two defensive possessions.
UPDATE:
Sherwood is really starting to have her way in the paint. This is not a complaint, but I think she’s taken very few breaks from it. The BG fans have a good case for complaint about the lack of three-second calls. Flynn steps to the line with 8:35 to go and they’re up 48-41.
UPDATE:
Vandy just hit their first 3 of the game just before the 11 minute mark. Carin Horne missed on the answer. 46-39 at the 10 minute mark.
UPDATE:
At the second media timeout, BG still holds a 10-point lead. This is crazy. BG 46-36 with 11:32 to go. I’m objective, I’m objective, I’m objective.
UPDATE:
Sherwood is back and the BG fans are dying for a three-second call. She’s got four quick points. BG leads 43-34 with 13 minutes to go.
Here’s a link to Vandy’s dance team. Not a perfect 10, but I’ll take it over the Liz Sherwood calendar. http://www.vanderbilt.edu/vuband/Danceline/members.htm
UPDATE:
BG hasn’t scored yet but they’ve kept the game at a relatively slower pace. They still haven’t given up a 3. A battle to watch for will be Goldsberry and Caroline Williams. They’ve been getting pretty physical. Goldsberry just hit a 3 to make it 40-28 for BG with 15:22 to go.
UPDATE:
BG needed a good possession and couldn’t get it. Vandy is being a lot more aggressive. Mann just picked up her third foul. Still 37-28 with 16:30 to go.
—
Christina Wirth is back in with three fouls for Vandy. They’re playing with fire apparently. BG has made the Commodores use the shot clock and smothered the perimeter pretty well up to this point. We’ll see how it goes. Vandy scores the first two buckets and it’s 37-28.

HALFTIME at the Breslin Center
By on March 20th, 2007
Craziness. Two No. 2 seeds have already been knocked out, BG says “Why not three?” Amber Flynn has 13 points, Carin Horne has nine and Achter has five assists to just one turnover. Her passes have been incredible so far.
Vandy is 0-of-3 from 3-point range and has 11 turnovers to BG’s six. Honegger has three steals and a block so far. The seniors have definitely elevated their game for this game, if it was even possible to play better than they normally do — they are.

BG vs. Vanderbilt
By on March 20th, 2007
UPDATE:
BG leads 37-24 at the half. This place is wild right now. You wish you were here and not reading this blog. I’ll be back with stats in a few minutes.
UPDATE:
Kate Achter just made an amazing pass with three seconds on the shot clock she hit Flynn for a lay up as it was about to expire. 35-22 BG with 1:36 in the first.
UPDATE:
For the nation’s best 3-point shooting team, Vanderbilt looks a little out of touch. Flynn just kissed it off the glass for two and BG leads 31-20 with 4 to go.
UPDATE:
If BG can get some more rebounds here they’d be golden. Sherwood is not very good from the foul line. She’s officially 3-of-6. That doesn’t sound bad but that includes three in a row. Liz just hit a 3 and Sherwood gets called for three seconds. BG leads 26-16 with six minutes.
UPDATE:
BG has got to be happy right now. Amber Flynn is headed to the line and the Falcons are up 21-16 with eight minutes to go. I’m impressed with the Falcons defense. Not one single 3-pointer yet for Vandy. We’re still lovin’ those Vanderbilt dancers.
UPDATE:
Sherwood could be the toughest matchup for BG this season. She is giving them a ton of trouble in the paint. The Commodores are now centering their offense with her. They throw it right to her every time.
UPDATE:
Horne and Mann both connect. It’s 17-10 with 10:27 to go in the first. BG has got the crowd fired up and their defense is looking good. They just need to limit Sherwood’s touches.
UPDATE:
BG wants a trip to Greensboro really badly. Goldsberry just went right after a rebound against Vandy’s biggest player and drew a foul. Mann follows w/ a jumper. Liz Sherwood(the largest Commodore) follows with an easy layup. She will be tough to guard. 12-8 with 12 minutes to go.
UPDATE:
BG is smothering the perimeter and the Commodores can’t get the ball inside effectively. Another two turnovers and a foul for Vandy. Still 10-6. 13 minutes in the first.
UPDATE:
John Turner and I just decided that mascots should learn the dance team’s dance moves and join them in their routines. We also decided Vandy’s dance team is very attractive.
UPDATE:
Lindsey Goldsberry enters and gets a steal right away. Ali Mann gets a layup at the other end. 10-6 BG at the first media time out. Hey, it could happen. BG looks good on defense and their offense is fluent enough to this point.
—
BG jumps out to a quick start at 4-0, then Vandy gets an easy layup and an offensive foul. Vandy hasn’t made a jumper yet, that’s a good sign. 7-4 with 17 to go.

Game time is near
By on March 20th, 2007
It’s about five minutes to tipoff and there are not a lot of BG fans just yet. My prediction is that BG looks inferior on paper but should not be ruled out because of what’s happened so far in the women’s tourney. I see them staying close but losing by six or eight.

There’s about 16 minutes left in the MSU-Rutgers game and Rutgers is up 10. I’m surprised MSU got to play on their home court as a No. 5 seed. Doesn’t seem fair, but Rutgers doesn’t seem to care, they’re kicking Sparty’s butt all over the court.
There is not a whole lot of orange just yet, I hope to see more once this game is over.

Second half- BG vs Oklahoma State
By on March 18th, 2007
UPDATE:
Ball game. BG 70-66. This place is going crazy right now. BG just picked up its first tourney victory since the 1989 season. Congrats to the Falcons.
UPDATE:
Ali Mann just made the possible dagger. It’s 68-64 with 17 second left. BG has the ball.
UPDATE:
Big stop for the Falcons and a layup by Achter- HUGE play.
Achter is at the line for two shots after a technical on Riley.
66-60 with 52.5 to play.
UPDATE:
BG takes the lead with 1:31 to go. 62-60 and Okla. St. has the ball with a full shot-clock.
If BG plays some defense they may just come out with a big win.
UPDATE:
Liz Honegger’s coming through in the clutch she just tied it with a three. 60-60 with 2:13. I need some oxygen.UPDATE:
This game is going down to the wire. BG needs to keep the pressure up on defense if they want this one.
UPDATE:
Kate Achter just hit the second 3 of her career. BG just blew a layup though and OSU converted on the other end. 53 all with 6:45 to go.
UPDATE:
Goldsberry and Honegger just nailed 3s and it’s tied again. Goldsberry just picked up her fourth foul though. It’s 51-49 with 8:30 to go.
UPDATE:
BG is not in good shape. Their momentum is gone and they’re down 49-43 with 10 minutes left.
UPDATE:
Goldsberry just got her third foul and the Falcons’ momentum is slowly being drained. They need a stop and a bucket here. 44-41 Okla. St. with less than 12 minutes to go.
–
BG takes the lead with an 8-0 run. Honegger and Thorburn both just hit 3s and BG leads 36-35 with 17 minutes left. The arena just erupted after that last 3.
BG needs to keep up the momentum and play good defense.
